Indicators of Obesity

BMI is only the approximate tool for estimating obesity. Very fit individuals with large amounts of muscle mass may have high BMIs, yet not be obese.

A more accurate measure of obesity is the body fat % determined by a skinfold test, in which the thickness of folds of fat at several (7 to 11) places of the body are measured.

There are free online calculators of body fat %, which require only a measuring tape. They use the formula estimating the ratio of several circumferences of your body to your weight, height, and gender.

Fiber and Weight Loss Diets

Fiber is a key component for any diet. Foods that are high in fiber help us to feel full sooner, and keep us feeling full longer. This is possible because the body reacts to the meal's volume rather than the calories it contains.

Fiber decreases so called energy density of foods. Ounce for ounce, lower energy density foods brings in fewer calories while signaling to stop a meal faster.

Sugar and Weight Control

Sugar and sugary foods should be excluding when dieting. Eating sugar causes a spike in insulin production in the body thus increasing appetite and cravings.

In the long run, peaks in insulin level lead to decreased insulin sensitivity, which then leads to depositing excess fat in fat depots around the waist. These depots are indicators of high risk factors of diabetes and heart disease.

Body Mass Index

Body Mass index, or BMI Body Mass Index is the ratio of weight to height. Your BMI can be calculated by dividing your weight (in kilograms) by the square of your height (in meters). A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal for most adults.

A BMI of over 25 is considered overweight and a BMI of over 30 is considered obese.

Lipolysis: burning the body fat

Did you know that body fat biochemically is really close to "burning" when we lose weight?

The process of burning, generally, occurs when molecules of oxygen join the "burning" substance turning it into something different. The substance of body fat turns into fatty acids in the process of lipolysis ("melting" the lipids - fats). These fatty acids are used as fuel for body's energy needs.

Lipolysis is a very complex process though. It's under control of brain: if the nerves connecting fat tissues with the brain are temporarily switched off by anesthetics, the lipolysis stops. If the centers of lipolysis control in the brain is damaged, a living creature can dye from starvation while its fat depots, sometimes huge, remain unused.

There are also many hormones and other regulators of bodily functions that affect fat burning, for instance, vitamins - some of them increase, some of them decrease the lipolysis rate.

The most potent lipolitics (fat burners) are also stimulants like caffein and ephedrine and they are most efficient when used together plus aspirin that prevent the body from getting used to the effect. However, please be advised that ephedrine and its herbal equivalent Ephedra (Ma Huang) is banned by FDA due to potentially dangerous side effects.

Body For Life

The "Body for Life" plan is an exercise and general healthy eating program. It was created by personal trainer Bill Phillips. A complete course of his diet plan is available online.

The plan focuses on diet and exercise, promoting frequent eating throughout the day. Dieters are allowed to "cheat" one day a week in order to avoid feeling deprived and satisfy cravings.

Fast blood vessels reaction to fatty meals

Research confirmed what emergency doctors knew long ago: the probability of heart attack or stroke is increased after big fat meals. The matter is, soon after such a meal, so called gut reflexes send signals to the brain that most of the blood will be required soon for digestion. The body reacts by temporarily hardening the arteries to prevent spending the blood on other bodily functions. It also tries to make you sleepy so you move less. If, however, you fight back and force your body to activities other than digestion, it can be dangerous.

There is a solution to this problem. Research showed that eating large salad made of dark green vegetables and tomatoes and drinking some red wine can neutralize the harmful effect of fat food. However, the best protective measure turned out to be a short bout of high-intensity exercise about 30 minutes before the meal.

Weight Control and Dieting

There's no such thing as the best diet for weight loss. Different people have different causes of being overweight so it natural that different diets suit them differently.

However, the enormous amount of diets boils down to only three types:

1. Low Calorie - requiring thorough planning and self-discipline;

2. Low Fat - is best for young physically very active people or for aging people naturally spending less energy;

3. Low Carbohydrate - attractive by the decreased appetite it causes and inctreased fat burning at rest.

The point of dieting should not be to lose weight quickly – if you focus on this you'll just gain the weight back later.

Causes of Obesity

Your obesity is most likely caused by your eating and fitness habits. Through modification of your habits, you can learn to control your weight successfully.

Consult with your doctor to see if you should include other kinds of therapy in with your diet plan.

Intestinal Problems, Obesity, and Exercise

There are more specific indicators (http://www.diet.lifetips.com/tip/102470/obesity-and-weight-loss-tips/weight-control-tips/indicators-of-obesity.html) whether or not a person is overweight than bowel problems. However, these problems can be connected with weight control and obesity. For one thing, a new study revealed that some people's ability to exercise may be hampered by a variety of intestinal problems that frequently affect people who are overweight.

A team of researchers in Minnesota found that exercise is protective against gastro-intestinal symptoms. "But we don't know if this is a 'did the chicken or the egg come first' kind of a thing. We are not sure which is the key, exercise or gastrointestinal symptoms," said Rona Levy, lead author of the study at University of Washington. People who began limiting their fat intake and increased the amount of fiber by eating more vegetables and fruit reported lower levels of symptoms.

Good fats and cholesterol profile

It is well known that consuming foods that are high in fat can seriously impair our blood biochemistry including cholesterol profile. When this conclusion is automatically transferred to a low-carb dieting, it's a misconception. Clinical data shows that the "high-fat, high-carb" diets - not" high-fat, low-carb" diets - create the cholesterol and heart disease problem.

Researchers from Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Texas, concluded:

"Compared with the low-carbohydrate diet, the high-carbohydrate diet caused a 27.5-percent increase in LDL ("bad cholesterol") levels; it also reduced levels of HDL ("good cholesterol") by 11 percent."
