Supermarket Diet Offers Low-Cost Calorie Counting

Developed by a registered dietitian and promoted in conjunction with Good Housekeeping magazine, the Supermarket Diet is billed as a lifelong plan for healthy eating, with an emphasis on counting calories while eating a sensible mix of “normal” foods as a way to lose and maintain weight. The diet is “family friendly” and the idea is that you can buy healthy foods at your local supermarket and prepare calorie-conscious but tasty meals at home that an entire family will eat without spending more than you normally would on food. Your daily calories are limited to 1,200 during the Supermarket Diet’s Boot Camp phase, then they increase to 1,500, and then to 1,800 during the Maintenance phase. If you like to grocery shop and cook, this may be the plan for you. Although the calories are limited the recipes are relatively quick and easy to prepare, and the ingredients are readily available at most supermarkets. Some dinner choices include Texas Chicken Burgers, Honey-Lime Salmon, and Curried Chicken with Mango Salad. Caveat: if you are used to eating a lot more than 1,200 calories per day, you may find this diet hard to follow because there’s not much room for extra indulgences, like the mid-morning café mocha. Diet author Janis Jibrin doesn’t advocate processed convenience foods, but being in touch with reality, she doesn’t ban dining out, even at fast food places like Taco Bell, as long as you follow some of her suggestions for lower-calorie choices at restaurants. DietTV.com has your best and full review for each diet plan with pictures of what you can/can't eat.
