May 28, 2010, Newsletter Issue #220: Indicators of Obesity

Tip of the Week

BMI is only the approximate tool for estimating obesity. Very fit individuals with large amounts of muscle mass may have high BMIs, yet not be obese.

A more accurate measure of obesity is the body fat % determined by a skinfold test, in which the thickness of folds of fat at several (7 to 11) places of the body are measured.

There are free online calculators of body fat %, which require only a measuring tape. They use the formula estimating the ratio of several circumferences of your body to your weight, height, and gender.
