Gotti Diet Has “Get Real” Appeal

If you are of a certain age, you may be unfamiliar with Frank Gotti Agnello, a formerly overweight teen and star of the now-discontinued “Growing Up Gotti” reality TV series. Gotti was overweight as a pre-teen and with the help of his family and health professionals, he was able to lose about 80 pounds and attain a muscular physique that has likely endeared him to many young female TV viewers.

The Gotti Diet plan consists of seven steps that are meant to be accessible and appealing to teenagers, especially teenage boys, but the principles are sound and can apply to anyone -- male or female, teen or adult -- who is willing to exercise and who doesn't want to eliminate food groups. You don't have to buy any special products or eat any special foods. All you have to do is buy the book (The Gotti Diet). The diet doesn't promise any specific results in a designated time, but it may be helpful for teens and young adults who are trying to make the transition from a childhood of unhealthy eating habits to a healthier adult lifestyle that they can maintain.

The steps are as follows:

  • One: Recognize that you have a weight problem and get motivated to do something about it.
  • Two: Ask your family and friends for help, even if that means enlisting your siblings to talk you out of unhealthy food choices.
  • Three: Don't be too hard on yourself and don't link your self worth to your body image. Remember that healthy weight loss takes time.
  • Four: Keep a food diary for at least a week to identify reasonable portion sizes and to plan a healthy mix of proteins, carbohydrates and fats.Gotti recommends using the USDA food pyramid as a guideline.
  • Five: Make better food choices. Like many diets, Gotti advocates substituting low-fat items for high-fat ones, especially when eating out.
  • Six: Exercise to burn calories and promote weight loss.
  • Seven: Combine weight lifting and cardiovascular exercise for good health and weight maintenance
